Bishop Greg Homeming OCD, left, and Lismore Dicoese’s vicar for safeguarding, Fr Paul Gooley (Lismore Diocese)

Lismore Diocese has recently undertaken a safeguarding audit that has demonstrated a thoughtful approach to the care of its communities. Source: ACSL.

The audit was conducted by Demetrius Consulting, one of the approved auditors on the Australian Catholic Safeguarding Limited’s panel of National Catholic Safeguarding Standards auditors.

The auditors reported that the diocese had a safeguarding approach, led by Bishop Greg Homeming OCD, that considered children and others at risk of abuse in very disrupted family, parish and community settings.

The diocese undertook a self-assessment, followed by a review, site visits and discussions with diocesan leaders, clergy, parishioners and staff.

“This audit report demonstrates how well embedded safeguarding is in the work of the diocese,” ACSL chief executive Ursula Stephens said.

“Parishes and community services worked together and responded magnificently to ensure that the most vulnerable in their communities are cared for and respected during difficult times,” Dr Stephens said.

“Bishop Greg has helped ensure that the diocese meets all its safeguarding obligations under the National Catholic Safeguarding Standards.”

ACSL acknowledges the Lismore Diocese has successfully embedded safeguarding within its culture, demonstrating a high level of commitment and understanding of the National Catholic Safeguarding Standards, and an approach that is underpinned by Catholic Social Teaching.

All recommendations have been accepted by the diocese and will be implemented in the next 12 months, along with continued vigilance and awareness of emerging risks.
