Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Charles Balvo, who has been travelling around Rockhampton diocese for the last week and visited parishes in Bundaberg, Gladstone, Mackay and Rockhampton, will be present at the Mass.

A spokeswoman for Rockhampton Diocese said 5.30pm Mass would be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

Originally from Toowoomba, Bishop McCarthy entered St Paul’s National Seminary and was ordained a priest for Brisbane Archdiocese in 1978.

He served a number of parishes in Gympie, Surfers Paradise, Laidley, Redcliffe, and Hendra as well as being dean in the south coast and northern rivers.

He held a number of other positions in the Brisbane Archdiocese, including director of the formation of the clergy, Holy Spirit Seminary rector and vicar for clergy.

Bishop McCarthy was appointed Bishop of Rockhampton by Pope Francis in 2014.

In his first address as Bishop of Rockhampton, Bishop McCarthy invited the congregation to pray with him to the Holy Spirit for guidance in his new ministry.

“First I’d ask you to pray for me, and ask your blessing upon my ministry as Bishop of Rockhampton,” he said.

“Our pastoral ministry as bishop, priests, religious, people of the diocese, is working together and rethinking and finding new ways to be missionaries, so the net becomes full for our faith working through love and we are promised the net will never tear.

“We are messengers of giving hope, peace and reassurance.”
