For Ms De La Vega, this mission extended beyond the responsibilities of her diplomatic role. It was also deeply rooted in her identity as a Catholic.
“My mission is not just a public mission of working for the government but to be, shall we say, a true Catholic, a true Christian,” Ms De La Vega said.
Her years in Australia have been filled with numerous initiatives within the Catholic community, significantly contributing to her sense of purpose.
“I must say that part of our foundation in Canberra has been attending Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral every Sunday and listening to [Archbishop Christopher Prowse’s] homilies,” she said.
“Along with the homilies from the other reverend fathers, we have also had projects with our Filipino priests, such as launching the Order of the Blessed Sacrament.
Ms De La Vega also reflected on the profound qualities she observed in the Australian community.
“There are two particular attributes that stand out to me about Australians,” she noted. “One is the egalitarian nature of many Australians – people are not overly concerned with your academic qualifications; instead, they focus on what you positively contribute to society.
“The other significant quality,” she continued, “is Australia’s commitment to fairness.
“If you are dedicated to doing a good job, you will find access and opportunities in Australia.
“However”, she warned, “I’ve observed a growing trend of secularisation. We all need to consider this as it could significantly impact the future of a multicultural society in Australia.”
The Canberra-Goulburn archbishop echoed her sentiments, praising her service and highlighting her contributions to the Filipino Catholic community in Australia, which continues to grow and thrive.
“The rise of the Filipino community, especially the Catholics in Australia, is unstoppable,” Archbishop Prowse said.
