The day began with an 11am Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral, followed by a gathering of religious, former students and community members whose lives have been shaped by the Sisters’ presence.

Canberra-Goulburn Archbishop Christopher Prowse set the tone, expressing gratitude for their enduring contribution.

“Today, we honour the religious of the archdiocese,” he said. “We bid farewell to the Good Samaritan Sisters, who have been a cornerstone of our community. Sr Rita, Sr Clare and Sr Sue, your presence here has been a blessing, and we thank you for your faith and dedication.”

The Sisters first arrived in the archdiocese in 1878, leaving a legacy of education, pastoral care and outreach across communities, including Braidwood, Queanbeyan, Moruya and Canberra.

Congregational Leader Sr Catherine McCahill reflected on that history.

“We give thanks for the women who have served God’s mission,” she said. “From teaching in schools to pastoral work and outreach, the Sisters have been sustained by the communities they served. It’s a legacy of faith, education, and being good neighbours in a global world.”

She also acknowledged the deep relationships formed over generations.

“The association between the Sisters and the people has been long, convivial, and fruitful,” she said. “We are grateful for the care and support you have shown us. Be assured, we will not forget you.”

The day also included a presentation to Archbishop Prowse, with Sr Catherine gifting a painting by Australian artist Justin O’Brien depicting the Good Samaritan parable.

“There’s something very beautiful about this painting,” she said. “It’s fitting that it remains here as a symbol of our shared mission.”

The last Sisters residing in Canberra are now preparing to move to Sydney.
