Two Marist180 programs and one staff member are in the running for New South Wales Youth Work Awards, to be held later this month.
Based in Blacktown in Greater Western Sydney, Marist180 is a Catholic organisation that provides a range of programs and services to help young people create positive change in their lives.
These include education and training opportunities, engagement services, pathways to employment, out-of-home care, and accommodation.
Marist180 staffer Isileli Koloamatangi has been shortlisted for the NSW Youth Worker of the Year.
Mr Koloamatangi has supported hundreds of young people for more than 24 years. His success in out-of-home care stems from his ability to foster belonging and security, essential for the boys’ growth.
Mr Koloamatangi inspires young people to excel academically, engage in health services, and develop life skills. He strives to give these children the childhood they deserve, creating memories and ensuring secure attachments.
Supported by his family, Mr Koloamatangi volunteers for special occasions, transforming celebrations into cherished moments and providing the boys with genuine family experiences.
The Hebersham Aboriginal Youth Service (HAYS) House has been shortlisted in the Outstanding Work with First Nations Young People category.
HAYS House addresses the critical needs of homeless Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in the Mount Druitt area.
Expanding from direct outreach support with two Aboriginal caseworkers in 2004, HAYS House introduced intensive, supported accommodation services for young people experiencing crisis.
Marist180’s Unaccompanied Humanitarian Minors (UHM) program has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Work with Young People from Diverse Cultures, Backgrounds, Experiences. Federal
UHM are young people who have travelled to Australia under the federal Government’s humanitarian program through the Department of Home Affairs.
These young people are without parents or guardians and are granted refuge in Australia, in primary and secondary schooling.
Marist180 provides 24/7 support, taking on day-to-day parental responsibilities for these young people.
The collaborative program takes a holistic approach to support each child by nurturing their culture, religion, and individual strength to enable them to integrate into the country and to develop community relationships.
The NSW Youth Work Awards will be held at Dubbo RSL on October 31.
