“As an agency of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, this initiative is a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainability, aligning with the principles of Laudato Si, which calls for a cultural shift towards total sustainability,” Xavier chief executive officer Richard Littler said.

“By reducing energy costs through solar, we can redirect vital resources to enhance the care and services we provide to our guests.”

Xavier Clinical Services general manager Sandra Daniels emphasised the importance of reliable power in maintaining essential care.

“The children and young people who stay with us at Xavier Place require complex care, making a dependable power source critical,” she said.

The initiative was officially launched by Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, who was welcomed by Mr Littler and Ms Daniels.

Together with Xavier chair Bernard Baker, Mr Schrinner unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.

Xavier Place in Yeerongpilly provides short-stay respite, care and support for children and young people with complex physical disability and related health needs.

During their stay, children and young people receive specialist support from the Xavier Place team of support workers and on-site enrolled and registered nurses.

Guests enjoy age-appropriate activities, a sensory room, indoor and outdoor play spaces, and the opportunity to meet new friends and experience a sense of independence away from the family home.

Funded by the Lord Mayor’s Grant, the energy initiative included the installation of a 30kW solar system at Xavier Place through Paramount Energy.

During his visit, the Mr Schrinner spent time with Xavier clients Joel and Maddie and met Chester, a pet therapy dog, and his owner, Brad, who are regular visitors to Xavier Place.

Joel presented Mr Schrinner with a Xavier teddy bear, while Maddie asked him about his own pets.
