Plans are progressing for a new 120-bed aged care facility in Darwin, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing Queensland not-for-profit organisation Ozcare as the preferred provider. Source: CHA.
The project aims to meet a growing need and greater flexibility in residential care for the Northern Territory’s ageing population.
Ozcare is a special work of the St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland, operating 19 aged care facilities in the state.
“Ozcare brings extensive experience in delivering high-quality aged care services across Queensland, and we are pleased to be considered for a project that aims to create a place of pride and connection for the Darwin community,” Ozcare chief executive officer Kevin Mercer said.
“Ozcare has designed, constructed and operates large facilities on sites across Queensland from the Gold Coast up to Port Douglas. Our facilities are staffed by experienced nurses, carers, allied health professionals, cooks, and client service staff who deliver around-theclock care and support to our clients.
“At every Ozcare facility, we are privileged to provide high-quality care in a supportive, home-like environment, close to family and the local community.”
Ozcare chief operating officer aged care Lanna Ramsay said Ozcare would be supported by the Commonwealth Government, which would provide up to $60 million in funding to build the facility.
Further relationships are being established, and discussions have commenced with the Northern Territory Government departments as we begin our early planning.
“Our highest priority is to provide a new aged care facility that supports the community and delivers high-quality aged care that meets the needs of the individuals,” Ms Ramsay said.
“As Ozcare has grown, we have focused on providing a continuum of care for our clients.
“We are growing services to support a greater number of older Australians to live independently at home for longer.”
Ms Ramsay said Ozcare is “committed to providing culturally safe, client-focused care that reflects the needs and values of the individual”.
“Our experience in supporting older Australians, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, will help inform the design and operation of this facility, ensuring it becomes a place where First Nations feel respected and supported.”
