The award is presented annually by the Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) in honour of Dr A W Jones AO, a South Australian educator whose contributions to education spanned local, national and international levels.

It recognises an outstanding South Australian educational leader whose achievements reflect the values and areas of concern championed by Dr Jones.

Cue Dr McGoran, who brings more than 35 years of experience in education to his role, having served as a teacher, principal and chief executive of the SACE Board of South Australia before taking up the position of executive director of Catholic Education SA in 2017.

He has led a system of 101 Catholic schools, supporting more than 58,000 students and 10,000 staff across metropolitan and regional South Australia.

Dr McGoran’s leadership has been defined by a commitment to ensuring Catholic education remains affordable and accessible to all. This has included the establishment of new schools in areas of greatest need, the creation of special assistance schools, and the provision of targeted scholarships.

Nationally, Dr McGoran serves as chair of the Educational Excellence Standing Committee, advancing excellence in teaching and learning beyond South Australia’s borders.
