Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli (ACBC)

Archbishop Comensoli used the horror sparked by a planned livestreamed US execution to call out what he describes as a hidden “culture of death” closer to home, criticising major Australian political parties for failing to properly address abortion and voluntary assisted dying.

In a strongly-worded opinion piece for the Herald Sun, Archbishop Comensoli noted that while US authorities had cancelled plans to livestream the execution of a convicted mass murderer, the execution itself would still proceed.

He pointed to this case, along with a recent botched execution of another prisoner, as proof that there was no “dignified” way to end a life, despite what advocates claimed.

The Archbishop argued that similar brutal realities were occurring in Australia, through abortion and voluntary assisted dying (VAD), but that these deaths were largely hidden from public view and scrutiny.

He also slammed a recent announcement by the Victorian Labor Party that, if re-elected, taxpayers would fully fund abortions for expectant mothers across the state.

The Liberal and National Coalition quickly matched the commitment, drawing further rebuke from the Archbishop.

Drawing a parallel with capital punishment, the Archbishop said Australia had rightly abandoned the death penalty decades ago, recognising it had the means to safely incarcerate dangerous criminals for life.

He questioned why the same logic could not be applied to protecting the unborn and supporting the terminally ill.
