Despite the winter chill, about 500 people gathered to witness the special occasion, a testament to the love and support surrounding BJ as he embarks on his spiritual journey.
BJ’s path to the priesthood began in a home deeply rooted in faith. Raised in a loving family by parents Linda and Clint Perrett, he and siblings Eve, Sonya, Mya and Neil were immersed in prayer and connection to the local church community from a young age. It was during a gap year after high school, working alongside twin sister Eve on a broccolini farm, that BJ recognised stirrings of a deeper calling. Amid the rows of green and the simplicity of farm life, he discerned that the priesthood was not just a possibility, but a vocation he was meant to pursue.
The ordination Mass, celebrated by Bishop Ken Howell, marked the culmination of BJ’s years of preparation: five years of theological study and spiritual formation, a year of pastoral placement, and six months serving as a deacon.
The ceremony was rich with tradition as BJ made solemn promises, received the laying on of hands, and was anointed with the Oil of Chrism, powerful symbols of the Church’s blessing and commissioning.
Also in attendance were Emeritus Bishops Bill Morris and Robert McGuckin, Seminary Rector Fr Neil Muir, many former classmates at Holy Spirit Seminary, and most of the priests of the Toowoomba Diocese. Clergy and congregation combined braved the cold evening, offering prayers and congratulations. Their presence reflected the impact BJ has already made and the hope they hold for his future ministry.
“Being ordained in this Jubilee year, I pray I can be a sign of hope, a sign that God is faithful to His promises and does not abandon His people,” BJ said. “I know that I lay my life down in order to be raised up to the order of the presbyterate, which means being raised up for sacrifice and service. I hope to be a part of the renewal of the Church and the renewal of society that flows from this.”
