Andrea Obeyesekere (CSPA)

Catholic School Parents Australia has welcomed the release of the National Standard on Addressing Bullying in Australian Schools, a significant milestone in ensuring every child can learn and thrive in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.

CSPA chair Andrea Obeyesekere commended Education Minister Jason Clare for his leadership and commitment to listening to the voices of parents and families throughout the national rapid review process.

“CSPA sees the inclusion of parent perspectives as critical to strengthening this important work. It ensures that families remain central partners in the shared responsibility of creating safer school communities,” Ms Obeyesekere said.

The introduction of a National Standard, endorsed by all state and territory education ministers, provides much-needed consistency across Australia.

This coordinated approach will help schools to respond to bullying swiftly and effectively, support the wellbeing of all students, and build trauma-informed practices among teachers and school staff.

CSPA particularly welcomed the $10 million federal Government investment, including funding for a national awareness campaign and new resources for teachers, students and parents. The establishment of a national resource hub will also be invaluable in giving educators access to evidence-based programs and practical tools that strengthen prevention and response efforts.

“Parents across Australia can take confidence in knowing that this initiative reflects a genuine national commitment to protecting every child’s right to feel safe at school,” Ms Obeyesekere said.

“CSPA looks forward to continuing to work with the Minister, education authorities and school communities to ensure that the National Standard translates into real and positive change for students and families alike.”
