Blessing the Loreto Community Housing office was Archbishop Julian Porteous’s last official act as Archbishop of Hobart (Hobart Archdiocese/Josh Low)

The blessing of the Loreto Community Housing office in Bridgewater, Hobart, was another significant moment in the unfolding story of Hobart Archdiocese’s service of providing social and affordable housing to those in need.

The blessing on June 20 was Archbishop Julian Porteous’s last official act as Archbishop of Hobart, with the announcement of Archbishop-elect Anthony Ireland as his successor coming later that evening.

Archbishop Porteous emphasised that the story of the housing provider has been remarkable and something to be proud of.

“Using our skills to advance the situation of people, building houses to house them, showing care and concern for people who battle in life, all this seeks to enhance the worth and dignity of each person,” Archbishop Porteous said.

“Today as I bless these beautiful facilities, let us all recall the final purpose of these facilities and the work we do here: we are here to serve those in need and show compassion and kindness to those who struggle in life.

“May the Lord not only bless these facilities but all who will work here for Loreto Community Housing and bless those who visit here seeking help and assistance,” he said.

LCH chief executive Cody Burdon said the new office building was a tool to help the organisation carry out its mission more effectively.

He said the physical proximity to those they serve enables their work to be more relational, responsive and grounded.

“Loreto Community Housing exists to serve those on the margins of our society – those who are too often overlooked or forgotten,” he said.

“In line with the mission of the Church, we seek to provide not just housing, but dignity, stability and a sense of community.
