The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Centre for the History of Philosophy has welcomed scholar Rabbi Dr Samuel Lebens to Australia as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Belfer Oration in the History of Jewish Philosophy.
A partnership between the university and The Great Synagogue Sydney, the annual oration is named in honour of Sydney couple John and Anna Belfer and is supported by the Belanna Trust.
Attended by more than 200 people, this year’s lecture on July 1 was on the topic “Is Free Will an Illusion? Authoring the Story of Our Lives with Hasdai Crescas and Joseph Albo”. It explored fundamental questions of human agency, divine influence and moral responsibility through the thought of two medieval Jewish philosophers.
Rabbi Dr Lebens, a philosopher at the University of Haifa and one of the leading contemporary voices in Jewish philosophy, challenged the audience to consider how philosophical ideas developed centuries ago continue to shape modern understanding of personal identity, choice and human flourishing.
The lecture was followed by a conversation between Dr Lebens and ABC Radio National’s Andrew West.
Established in 2025, the Belfer Oration brings distinguished scholars of Jewish philosophy to Sydney to deepen academic and public understanding of one of the world’s great intellectual traditions.
CHOP co-director David Bronstein said last year’s response showed strong interest in serious public discussion of philosophical and religious ideas.
