Turning the first sod at the new St John of God Subiaco Hospital clinical building (St John of God Health Care)

St John of God Subiaco Hospital has reached a major redevelopment milestone, with early foundation works underway on its new six-storey clinical building designed to support increased access to specialised care and expand surgical capacity.

The new building is the cornerstone of Stage Three of the hospital’s significant redevelopment and will include a proposed dedicated heart centre, an expanded orthopaedic surgical area, four integrated operating theatres, a new day of surgery admissions area and a new chapel.

The milestone was recognised at a groundbreaking ceremony attended by project partners and representatives from the City of Subiaco and Town of Cambridge.

The ceremony, which featured a formal sod-turning and traditional smoking ceremony, gave attendees the opportunity to reflect on the significance of the new clinical building and the benefits it will bring to patients and the wider community.

St John of God Subiaco Hospital director of redevelopment Daniel Price said construction of the new clinical building followed extensive planning and enabling works undertaken across the first two stages of the redevelopment, with planning commencing in 2018 and works beginning in 2021.

“The new clinical building is many years in the making. To now see Stage Three works underway is exciting for our committed doctors, caregivers and the broader Western Australian community, bringing us a step closer to delivering expanded services and improved care for future patients,” Mr Price said.

“Through purpose-built facilities incorporating the latest technologies and equipment, we will further improve clinical care and patient experience, expand our capacity and services to meet the evolving needs of Western Australia’s growing and ageing population, and strengthen our leading research program.”

St John of God Health Care Group chief executive Bryan Pyne said the Subiaco Hospital redevelopment formed a key part of the organisation’s ongoing commitment to meeting the future demand for health care in Western Australia.

“This redevelopment will ensure more Western Australians can access world-class cardiac, orthopaedic and surgical care in hospitals and services designed to continue to meet the needs of the communities we serve, both now and into the future,” he said.

Construction of the new clinical building is expected to reach completion in 2028, before opening to patients in early 2029.
