Canon Law Society president Fr Ken Cafe ofm

The Canon Law Society of Australia and New Zealand has announced its 57th annual conference will take place September 2-5 at Rydges South Bank, Brisbane.

The event will feature a line-up of internationally acclaimed speakers, providing a comprehensive platform for discussing pivotal issues in canon law and providing lay persons and clerics the opportunity to enhance their professional development.

In addition, the conference will feature workshops applicable to the work of canonical tribunals and preliminary investigations, and other relevant topics, providing attendees with practical skills and knowledge.

Society President Fr Ken Cafe ofm said the conference would allow members to reconnect in person and engage with critical issues in canon law.

“The event will provide lay people and clergy with the opportunity to listen to an array of talented speakers, while enriching their understanding of canon law. The sessions and workshops are designed to equip attendees with the practical knowledge and skills that are essential in addressing contemporary challenges in the Catholic Church’s legal framework,” he said.

Key presenters include: Dr Edward Morgan KC, an internationally recognised authority in penal canon law;  Fr Giorgio Giovanelli, a moral theologian and canon law expert who will draw on his experience as a Marriage Commissioner with the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith; Dr Rocio Figueroa, a leading voice in the aftermath of the New Zealand royal commission inquiry on abuse in care; and Chad Glendinning, dean of the Canon Law Faculty at Saint Paul University, Ottawa, who specialises in sacramental and liturgical law. Dr Glendinning will host a session on Juridical Reflections on the Synod on Synodality.
