This was made possible with the introduction of the Ministerial Infrastructure Designation Lite process as well as some regulatory amendments.

The new reforms mean low-risk land could be made available for social and affordable housing as quickly as 12 weeks.

Brisbane Archdiocese government relations director Cathy Uechtritz commended the reforms.

“The housing crisis has been a major issue in this state for some years,” she said.

“Unlocking faith-based land to provide social and affordable housing has been something we have been advocating for.

“We applaud the government’s speedy and proactive engagement in developing pathways to make this vision a reality.

“The Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane is ready to work with the Crisafulli Government and the community housing sector to deliver meaningful contributions to Queensland’s housing crisis.”

The reforms came into effect on December 20.

“These changes remove unnecessary regulatory burdens, allowing faith-based organisations to focus on delivering high-quality, affordable housing that serves the community,” Ms Uechtritz said.

“The Archdiocese of Brisbane has been integral to Queensland’s communities for generations, and this initiative enables us to continue our legacy of care and support in a meaningful way.”

The archdiocese has begun identifying potential sites that could progress under the new MID Lite framework, ensuring collaboration with the community housing sector and alignment with the government’s housing goals.

“We are excited to work with our local parishes to move forward under this framework,” Ms Uechtritz said.
