Catholic Social Services Australia has congratulated Ben Carroll on his appointment as the Premier of Victoria, after Jacinta Allan resigned from the post yesterday.
Mr Carroll will lead Victorian Labor to the state’s November election after winning a chaotic leadership spill triggered by Ms Allan’s resignation.
Catholic Social Services Australia chief executive Jerry Nockles offered congratulation to “Premier Carroll at this pivotal moment for Victoria”.
“Catholic social service providers are committed to walking alongside those experiencing vulnerability, and we welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with the government to advance policies that promote justice, inclusion, and compassion across the state, Dr Nockles said.
‘‘The challenges faced by disadvantaged Victorians require a unified and compassionate response.
“We are hopeful that under Premier Carroll‘s leadership, the government will champion initiatives that uphold human dignity and foster social cohesion.
“Catholic social services stand ready to contribute our expertise and on-the-ground experience to these shared goals.”
Mr Carroll , who was serving as Victoria’s Deputy Premier and Education Minister before yesterday’s spill, was educated at St Christopher’s Primary School in Airport West and St Bernard’s College in Essendon.
In his first move as Premier, Mr Carroll called a royal commission into the construction sector and said he would establish a special prosecutor to work alongside it.
He also vowed to bring forward greater powers for the state’s anti-corruption watchdog.
“In my government, integrity will not be optional”, he said in a press conference after his swearing in.
“Whether in business, politics or the union movement, there will be zero tolerance for those that misuse their positions.”
