Jesuit Mission Australia will this week host a webinar discussion on people fleeing the war in Ukraine, with a focus on vulnerable families who have made it across the border to Romania.
During the 45-minute webinar on Thursday, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Romania director Fr Marius Talos SJ will provide an update on the Jesuits’ emergency response to the war and its support for vulnerable families who fled to Romania.
In addition, Ukrainian refugee Anastasiia will share her story of how she fled to Romania with her son and now works for JRS Romania, assisting other Ukrainians in need.
With the support of Jesuit Mission, JRS Romania has been welcoming Ukrainian refugees at the border for more than a year and providing them with emergency assistance, as well as hope and opportunity.
“Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the round-the-clock emergency assistance provided by our Jesuit partners overseas, over 15,000 refugees have received support in Romania alone,” said Jesuit Mission chief executive Helen Forde.
This assistance includes immediate, life-sustaining relief such as emergency accommodation, food vouchers and financial and mental health support.
With no end to the war in sight, the Jesuits will continue to support Ukrainian refugees with education opportunities, employment support, legal assistance and ongoing accompaniment to integrate into their new country.
JRS Romania, as part of the JRS Europe and Xavier Network humanitarian response, has offered more than 40,000 services to the Ukrainian community since the war started.
