Australians have been implored to dig deep this Christmas and donate what they can to help heartbroken families hit by record rainfall and flooding in far north Queensland.

Cities and small communities – including Cairns, Port Douglas and Wujal Wujal – have been inundated by floodwaters after three days of significant rain in the wake of Cyclone Jasper.

Thousands of homes in the region are expected to have suffered flood damage, while stranded residents in other remote towns are still waiting for government assistance.

The clean-up and recovery mission is set to last several months and could cost billions, with houses, businesses, roads and critical infrastructure all needing to be repaired.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles held a press conference yesterday to provide a flood update, where he launched an appeal to help flood victims.

The Queensland Government kickstarted the fundraiser by donating $1.5 million that will be split between five non-government organisations to help the recovery effort. The St Vincent de Paul Society will receive $350,000 to help aid flood victims, so too will the Australian Red Cross, The Salvation Army and Uniting Care Queensland. The GIVIT charity will receive $100,000 to help organise Christmas presents.

In a statement on the Vinnies Queensland website, the charity told Queenslanders, “We want you to know that Vinnies is here to help. If you or someone you know needs support with accommodation, food or clothing please reach out to us”.
